The latest in a series of infant/toddler workshops planned for family child care providers will focus on ?Culturally Appropriate Living Environments? and is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m., on March 8 at Community Connection for Child Care (CCCC), 2000 24th Street in Bakersfield. Presented by CCCC the workshops represent a comprehensive effort by the California Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations and California Department of Education to strengthen young children?s learning and development through high-quality early care and education. Registration is required and can be made by calling (661) 861-5330.
Workshop instructor will be Teresia Paca, Kern County Superintendent of Schools early childhood education teacher. She will lead providers through the exploration of culture and its influence on the development of a child?s identity. Those in attendance will also learn how to provide culturally appropriate care for families and discover how to identify one?s own culture and values.

Shanghai court rejects Proview injunction, okays the sale of Apple iPads (update: Proview sues Apple in US courts)
For those who've just caught up with the story, here's a quick overview: starting in 2000, Proview's Taiwan branch registered the "iPad" trademark in several countries, with the Shenzhen branch doing the same in China. Apple then bought worldwide rights from Proview Taiwan, which would have included China. Proview Shenzhen, who has gone into debt restructuring since 2010, is now saying that it never authorized its Taiwan counterpart to do so, but Apple claims that it has Proview Shenzhen's signatures on the paperwork. It looks like eventually it's going to get easier to grab that iPad in China, though if Apple's appeal case in the Guangdong court fails, then Proview could easily strike again with more ammo.
Update: Looks like Proview is bringing the fight to Apple's home turf. We've just learned that the Chinese company filed a lawsuit against the Cupertino firm on February 17th in Santa Clara County, California, where it alleges deception in Apple's purchase of the iPad trademark. [WSJ]

In property, talk of 'risk-on' and 'risk-off' can be heard from traders as a new year unfolds. A year ago, the 'risk-on' real estate trade was the thing to do and investors of different stripes returned to real estate in larger numbers than any time since early 2008. A broadening band of private equity assets and products gained popularity after the risk off trades of 2010 and the year of nearly no trades in 2009.?
?Now, in early 2012, the risk-off trade is dominant again. In real estate parlance, only 'core' assets (fully leased, dominant buildings in major markets) have full access to liquidity. Risk-averse money seeks safety in the most expensive property markets in the world. Like investment grade bonds, core properties have traded up in price, even though fundamentals are weak. But the low risk reputation of these assets may be illusory.? Investors seeking a safe haven in property have bid up the prices, and driven down the yields, to levels that may be unsustainable, especially if and when interest rates rise again. In London?s West End a luxury retail flagship store traded recently at a record low yield of 2.9%. In North America, mid-rise rental apartment buildings in trendy neighbourhoods routinely trade at a 4% yield or lower and in Shanghai, while the government tries valiantly to reduce the pressure on luxury residential prices, office buildings trade at 5% yields - lower than government bonds.???At the same time, risk-on trading has found a home in the world of real estate debt. The mountains of real estate debt accumulated during the credit bubble era are starting to crumble. NAMA, the Irish government?s bad bank for property development debt, is auctioning large chunks of its ?72bn pool of performing and non-performing loans across Europe and North America. In December large portfolios of discounted real estate loans were sold by RBS and Lloyds. Barclays and HBOS have already exited their North American and Asian loans through secondary market trades. The French and German banks are next to start selling, as the Euro crisis and Basel III force these institutions to pare back to domestic, conservative senior debt. American banks face a similar mountain of expiring debt and are steeling themselves to start packaging it up for sale. Meanwhile, the smart money is moving into 'mezzanine' real estate finance, where yields can be twice, thrice or even four times as high as the yield on senior debt or on direct equity.?
?How will trading in discounted real estate debt affect the underlying commercial property market? ?Non-performing, barely performing, and 'zombie' debt rarely has prime, core assets as collateral. Many of the debt purchasers hope to wrest control of the collateral from the original borrower. As they do so, more of these 'not-quite-core' assets will start to trade, as they are pulled out of limbo land.? Investors willing to take on a degree of complexity, or who are willing to shift focus from Knightsbridge to Hammersmith, or Madison to Third Avenue, will find much better value in these 'core-plus' properties, as we in the trade call them.??
?Commercial property is clearly divided into the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' when it comes to liquidity and pricing and returns look quite different on either side of this liquidity gap.? In geographic terms, the West End of London, Mid-town Manhattan, Central Paris and La Defense, Hong Kong-Central, and Shanghai?s Pudong and Puxi districts are all firmly in the 'have' category. They exert a strong pull, accounting for an extraordinarily high proportion (by value) of all activity that took place in major markets in 2011 according to Jones Lang LaSalle research.??
?Yet, there is a great, wide world of real estate beyond these ?ber-expensive, low-yielding districts. County coroner dies after fall
CINCINNATI -- The county coroner in Cincinnati has died, more than a week after he fell and injured his head.
Hamilton County Coroner Anant Bhati?died late Friday at University Hospital. Hospital officials declined to detail the cause of death, according to cincinnati.com.
The 71-year-old doctor had fallen outside the Westin Hotel Downtown on Feb. 8.
A native of Jodphur, India, Bhati had also been director of gynecology at Good Samaritan since 1980.?He delivered?thousands of babies at the hospital, according to cincinnati.com.

So Paulo Research Foundation, Fapesp, and Ohio State University will inaugurate on February 27 at The Ohio Union Gallery, the exhibition Brazilian Nature Mystery and Destiny, which addresses the knowledge about the Brazilian biodiversity. Promoted in partnership with Ohio State Innovation Group, the exhibition will be open to the public until March 30.
The opening ceremony will be attended by Dr. Daniel Janies, Associate Professor of the College of Medicine, Dr. Caroline Whitacre, Vice President for Research and Paulo Sotero, Director of Brazil Institute at Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington DC.
To celebrate the opening of this exhibit, the Ohio State Innovation Group for Global Infectious Disease Research is holding a seminar on "Brazilian Nature and Our Scientific Partnerships" on Monday, February 27 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the West Ballroom of the Ohio Union. The seminar, which will touch on biomedicine, biodiversity, bioenergy and educational partnerships, will focus on research of mutual interest to the United States and Brazil.
The exhibition has as its main reference the Flora brasiliensis, the work of the German botanist Carl Philipp von Martius (1794-1868), that even 171 years after his first published volume remains the most comprehensive survey of the flora.
Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, scientific director of FAPESP, says: "It is important to show that Brazil is aware of the biodiversity in a sophisticated way, which is to treat it as an object of research programs well organized and well prepared that produce results with global impact."
With reproductions of images, illustrations and explanatory texts, the 37 panels that make up the exhibition were designed based on data from three projects supported by FAPESP: Flora brasiliensis Online and Revisited, Phanerogamous Flora of the State of So Paulo and the Biota-FAPESP Program.
Daniel Janies, Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at OSU, says: "The increasing strength of the United States' relationship with Brazil can be seen through the recent reciprocal Presidential visits as well as the joint work by the NSF and FAPESP scientists. The Ohio State University's relationship with Brazil will continue to grow. For example, we have many joint research projects, we will host a meeting with scientists and educators from Brazil and will travel for joint research in Brazil in mid 2012. We also plan to open an office in So Paulo in 2014."
Representatives of the three projects assisted the compilation of the content of the show, which was successfully presented at the Museum of the Botanical Garden in Berlin in 2008, the Haus der Wissenschaft at Leipzig University, in Bremen in 2009, the Woodrow Wilson Center (Washington) in 2011 and currently at the Museum of the University of Heidelberg, Germany, until June 29.
Exhibition in three parts
The design of the Flora brasiliensis Online and Revisited, which corresponds to the first part of the exhibition, represents a continuity to the work of Martius, who had his last volume published after the author's death in 1906.
In 2006, the project has made available on the Internet the full version of the work of Martius, with 10,207 pages with text descriptions of nearly 23,000 species and nearly 4,000 illustrations. The Flora brasiliensis Online and Revisited includes the update of the nomenclature used in the original work of Martius and the inclusion of species described after its publication, with new information and recent pictures.
The work was funded by a partnership between FAPESP, the Vitae Foundation and Natura Cosmetics and executed by the Reference Center on Environmental Information (Cria), located at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the Missouri Botanical Garden, United States. The Flora brasiliensis Online is available in http://florabrasiliensis.cria.org.br.
The second part of the exhibition refers to the project Phanerogamous Flora of the State So Paulo, started in 1993 with the participation of over 200 researchers. The project brings together researchers from University of So Paulo (USP), Unicamp, So Paulo State University (Unesp), three research institutes - Botanical, Forestry and Agronomy and the Department of Parks and Green Areas of the Municipality of So Paulo. Embrapa researchers in other Brazilian states and other countries also contribute.
The third element of the exposure exceeds the boundaries of botany and addresses biodiversity more generally, corresponding to the BIOTA-FAPESP Program, whose results have been applied as an instrument of environmental preservation in the State of So Paulo.

"The feedback we got from our primary audience was that they were seeing commercials that made them want to turn the channel," Westminster spokesman and longtime TV host David Frei said Thursday.
Nestle Purina PetCare is the new sponsor for America's most prestigious dog competition that begins Monday at Madison Square Garden, replacing Pedigree after 24 years. The switch will bring a shift in the tone of the television commercials that drew nearly as much attention as who won best in show.
Gone will be the haunting music and woeful pictures of dogs with pleading eyes wasting away at the pound, hoping to be adopted. Instead, Purina's main spots will feature dogs running on the beach, catching a Frisbee, frolicking in the snow and riding a surfboard.
Frei said he thought the Pedigree commercials took the wrong approach, backed by viewers who either muted the spots or flipped the channel and didn't turn back.
"Show me an ad with a dog with a smile. Don't try to shame me," he said. "We told them that and they ignored us."
He added: "Our show is a celebration of dogs. We're not promoting purebreds at the expense of non-purebreds. We celebrate all dogs," he said. "When we're seeing puppies behind bars, it takes away from that. Not just because it's sad, but it's not our message."
More than 2,000 purebred champion dogs are entered in the 136th Westminster Kennel Club show, with the winner to be chosen Tuesday night. Each evening at the Garden, an announcement is read over the public-address system encouraging people to visit shelters and adopt a pet.
The commercials air on USA Network and CNBC, which share coverage of the event. About 3.4 million viewers watched last year when a Scottish deerhound called Hickory won.
Pedigree was "surprised and disappointed" when it was dropped by Westminster, senior brand manager Lisa Campbell said.
Campbell said Westminster had made it clear in recent years "that we had become too focused on adoptions." She acknowledged that the ads struck a nerve and said there are other ways to encourage pet adoption.
She was certain, though, that the ads were effective. Campbell said shelters around the country had thanked Pedigree for raising the plight of homeless dogs. She said 4 million dogs get put in shelters each year and only half make it out. Among those who found a home was Sweet Pea, the pug mix she regularly takes to work with her.
"Westminster has been a great platform for us," she said. "We were able to tap into a dog-loving audience."
Melissa Martellotti, spokeswoman for parent company Mars Petcare US, said Pedigree had contributed $7 million to the pet adoption cause since 2006.
Frei said Westminster has input into the commercials Purina will show during its multiyear deal as a sponsor. He said Westminster had the same understanding with Pedigree, "but things that ended up on the air were not what we were led to believe."
Purina had long maintained a presence at Westminster and became a partner last June. Candy Caciolo, the company's portfolio director of specialty, breeder and pet acquisition, arrived in New York on Thursday, minus her two standard poodles, Peaches and Anne.
The companies and show officials declined to say how much Purina or Pedigree paid to secure advertising rights.
Caciolo said next week's ads had been in development for quite a while. While Purina was aware of the reaction Pedigree's commercials elicited over the years, "it wasn't really an issue for us," she said.

Obama birth-control rule stokes election-year fight (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Republican in the Congress on Wednesday denounced President Barack Obama's new rule on contraceptives as an assault on "religious freedom" and vowed to overturn it, as the White House sought to prevent the issue from becoming an election-year liability.
Fanning a political firestorm, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner joined an outcry from religious leaders and social conservatives over a requirement that health insurance plans, including those at Catholic hospitals, charities and universities, offer birth control to women.
Seeking to ease a controversy that has roiled the 2012 presidential race, White House spokesman Jay Carney appeared to leave the door open to compromise. He said Obama was sensitive to religious beliefs on contraception and hoped to find a way to implement the rule that can "allay some of the concerns."
But Obama, at a meeting with Senate Democrats, reaffirmed his decision and was "not equivocating," Senator Frank Lautenberg, who attended the closed-door session, told Reuters.
Republicans have seized upon the issue, seeing a chance to paint Obama as anti-religion and put him on the defensive at a time when signs of economic improvement appear to have energized his re-election bid.
The White House, caught off-guard by the fury of the response and now trying to calm objections, accused the Republicans of trying to make "political hay" out of the issue. It said it had begun outside discussions but gave no immediate sign of what, if any, concessions it might make.
"This attack ... on religious freedom in our country cannot stand and will not stand," Boehner vowed in a speech on the floor of his chamber.
The escalating fight centers on a provision in the 2010 healthcare law that requires health insurance to cover basic birth control services for women - even at Catholic charities, hospitals and universities.
Catholic bishops contend the policy infringes on religious liberty because the church does not condone the use of birth control pills or other contraceptives.
Boehner said if the president refuses to rescind the measure, Congress will do so legislatively.
But such a bill would have little chance of getting through a divided Congress. While Boehner may secure backing in the Republican-dominated House, he faces problems in the Senate, which is controlled by Obama's fellow Democrats.
No matter how Congress responds, Obama is in a political bind. A retreat would anger his liberal base, while refusal to budge could alienate some Catholic voters.
SEEKING TO CALM CONCERNS
At the White House, Carney said the administration was "focused on implementation of this rule," but made clear that it had time to try to address opponents' objections.
"There are ways to approach this that would ensure that the rule is implemented so that women have access to these important healthcare services no matter where they work, but also hopefully would allay some of the concerns," Carney said.
Carney pushed back against a New York Times report that Vice President Joe Biden and several other senior Catholic men in the administration cautioned about the political risks and were pitted against women advisers like health secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who argued in favor of the rule.
"I'm not going to get into internal deliberations," Carney told reporters. "Broadly speaking, the reports that line certain people up in some ways on this issue were inaccurate."
The rule has drawn heavy fire from the political right, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Carney took a swipe at Romney on Wednesday, calling him an "odd messenger" to be attacking Obama on the issue. He said it was "ironic" because Romney was criticizing Obama for pursuing a policy that is "virtually identical with the one that was in place when he was governor of Massachusetts."
Romney, speaking to reporters in Atlanta, shot back that Carney "needs to check his history," saying the birth-control provision was already in effect when he took office and that he tried to get it removed.
With the matter threatening to explode into a major election-year fight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he and fellow Senate Democrats support the president.
"Some have decided, again, to use women's health for political football," said U.S. Representative Lois Capps, a Democrat.
Backers of Obama's new rule say employees of faith-based groups should have access to birth control services in their health insurance coverage.
The Obama administration said on Tuesday it was willing to work with church-affiliated employers to implement the new policy, which was finalized on January 20 but will not take effect until next year.
During the weekend, clergy from the Catholic Church called for congregations across the country to pressure Obama to back down.
Boehner said, "Americans of every faith and political persuasion have mobilized in objection" to the rule, which he said "constitutes an unambiguous attack on religious freedom."
"This rule would require faith-based employers ... to provide services they consider immoral," he said, including, "sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and devices, and contraception."
