Design for GPS-based Vehicle Anti-theft System - IT Research Paper
With the development of our cuntry?s modern economic, the motor vehicles are also increasing. Although there has been vehicle anti-theft problem before, but with the promotion of their technology, the traditional means of anti-theft precautions have been unable to meet the needs of the anti-theft market now, so we need a more effective anti-theft system, we have studied a GPS Location-based vehicle anti-theft system. The anti-theft system is in different ways from the past, when the cars are stolen,it can track and report the position of the car in real-time, so that made the thief difficult to succeed. This paper introduces a new and effective anti-theft method. A GPS-based, using GSM digital mobile cellular communications network to provide a short message by wireless data communication, and positioning information and the transmission of orders. Vehicle location anti-theft system on the structure and composition of the working principle and gave a brief on the ARM Embedded System of GPS data extraction and the approach on detection and alarm. This system will effectively send information to the alarm center by GSM. The main task of anti-theft system is how to effectively detect the theft occurred and the first time, the stolen information will be sent to the central anti-theft and vehicle owners.Based on the Linux embedded operating system, using the advantages of GSM network that is large coveraged and high-speed communication, the system realizes interactive information between the monitoring center and car terminals in real-time. And the effectiveness of the system and stability have been fully able to meet the requirements of morden anti-theft system.

Rvarela ? Lessons You may need To Learn In Web Hosting
An established hosting business will also provde the functionality to build your own hosting packages & their charges for you to advertise to your industry & web hsoting clients.
By simply modifying some existing software code, you can create a web style and design content with a nice-looking appearance and exquisite. In Addition, a number of features enable you to combine with some other applications, including ASP.Internet, Web 0 programs, and several various other platforms.
Supplier web hosting is a type of services through which numerous servers tend to be operated by simply one business making it possible for clients to make the content out there via the internet. Such an organization also provide other companies such as net connectivity and also e-mail hosting. Essentially the consumers upload this content they want took advantage in the internet and also the web host company tends to make such articles available to online users.
Most of the start-up organizations face restricted budget, they can purchase determined by their latest needs. They?re able to go for extra purchase of living space when promoting their final product. This kind of elasticity is an additional great thing the reasons you need it.
A devoted hosting service is the specialized sort of hosting where a thoroughly managed server is focused to the needs of 1 user. Even if this service is created for large organization websites that receive a lot of hits every day, small companies can benefit from dedicated hosting as well. Together with dedicated hosting, you might have full accessibility to the entire web server.
Traditional web hosting is usually a necessity for some companies. Service repair shop with a site requires a web hosting host for the website. Most companies work with a third party merchant to posting the website on web server. Remote hosting server space could possibly be purchased for just a relatively low cost. Fast and also reliable internet connections are required to ensure 99 percent up use of the website.
Eco-friendly thing to be aware of in a web hosting supplier is their claims over the uptime that they can supply. Some companies will state they provide 100% up-time. These companies are generally lying. There is no such matter as 100% up-time. Even Yahoo website won?t have 100% uptime. A good uptime of 99% is good enough.
One way to save money on hosting is definitely searching for companies that offer a cost-free mail web server. Some hosting plans also include numerous domains along with free ecommerce software. If you intend to start an internet business, choose a web host that provides free accounting software, cost-free SSL Certificates, and affordable transaction processors.
Therefore our friend Dave starts with a quite easy Web Hosting package, after some web space plus a database. This individual installs WordPress and commences to blog critically, and then makes a decision he desires to start his online business. With his basic consideration he commission rates a Web Style and design Company to create him a great eCommerce internet site, with his web site built in as one of the features. Because his retail store grows, he / she finds that they can broaden his site fairly quickly, without having to be worried about any boundaries like he previously had with the Internet service provider.
Electronic safety mechanisms, chilling systems, along with Internet connections all call for the use of energy. Your hosting industry carries a negative influence on the environment. Fortunately that more and even more hosting providers are usually jumping arvixe review on the deck of to reduce the injury. Some of them possess datacenters that use alternative energy to power and cool their web servers. Others use solar panels to make some of the strength they need to maintain the servers operational. Those who do not have the financial resources to generate renewable energy can buy Renewable Energy Accreditation and switch to supplied vitality.

Halt Italian soccer for 2-3 years?
By VICTOR SIMPSON
Associated Press
Associated Press Sports
updated 11:22 a.m. ET May 29, 2012
ROME (AP) -Premier Mario Monti suggested Tuesday that Italian football should be suspended for two to three years after the latest match-fixing scandal rocked the national team and tarnished the image of the domestic game yet again just a week before the start of the European Championship.
Dawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests - including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri - to bring the total number of suspects arrested in the match-fixing probe to about 50 since last year. Many more have been placed under investigation.
"Football should be stopped for two to three years," Monti said on Tuesday in a powerful message to Italy's football authorities on the need to clean up the game. "It is not a proposal by the government but a question I am asking as someone who was passionate when football was still football."
Monti made the comments while standing beside the prime minister of Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine starting June 8.
"I'm not making a proposal, and even less is it a proposal that comes from the government, but it's a desire that sometimes I feel inside me: that it would really benefit the maturity of us Italian citizens if this game was completely suspended for two to three years," he said.
He also ruled out the use of public money to bail out football teams in difficulty.
Police swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday as part of the operation and Italy defender Domenico Criscito was left out of the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation.
Antonio Conte, who coached Juventus to the Serie A title this term, was also officially notified that he is under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while in charge of Siena in 2010-2011.
Apart from those arrested Monday, three people have been placed under house arrest and two others are to present themselves to authorities. Five of the arrests were made in Hungary.
Numerous others have had their houses searched, including Chievo Verona striker Sergio Pellissier as well as Conte and Criscito.
The investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. It has resulted in former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni being banned from football for three and a half years, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.
Serie A clubs Atalanta, Novara and Siena were among the 22 Italian teams notified at the beginning of this month that they are being investigated by sports authorities.
Prosecutors in Cremona have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years.
Italy has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal - known as Calciopoli - that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and lengthy bans for club and refereeing officials.
The Italian national team reacted in the best possible way, winning the World Cup later that year.

New Jack Librarian: Collective action for ebook collections
So let's change things. Here are three things *you* can do.
Sign this petition asking publishers to lend ebooks to libraries.?
While you wait for the petition to hit 10K and then for publishers to be moved by this overture, you can do the next two things.
Register your library with the Open Library ebook lending program
The Open Library/Internet Archive not only provides millions of free public domain ebooks, they also lend out ebooks from a set of 20th century works. They work with willing publishers to lend ebooks using a "traditional model" of one book being lent to one person at a time for up to two weeks. If your reader is in the IP range of a registered library, all they have to do is create an Open Library account, and then they can effortlessly borrow books from Open Library without any library intervention.
And that's how I pitched it when I talked to with my Library Administration about registering The Leddy Library with The Open Library: willing publishers, no intervention required by the library (although we could do some interesting integration with our OPAC down the road if we wanted to) and our readers will another option if they want reading material for their Nook or whathaveyou.
So, I got the okay and I registered our library. Because of that registration, I received a longer form in my inbox that I then filled out. I sent that form and one book donation to the Internet Archive. A few short weeks later, we now can offer ebooks that can be read online and offline.? You can too.
Have your library help unglue a book
I don't pretend I know what the shape of the ebook landscape will be in the future but I do know what I like in the present. As such, I'm an enthusiastic supporter of unglue.it (if you are unfamiliar with the venture, Andy Woodworth has just written a good description of the project).I've been following the five unglueit campaigns with interest and while it has been good to see the number of individuals who have stepped forward to personally invest in a future where ebooks are available to everyone *and* publishers and authors are compensated, I was a little concerned that I hadn't seen any libraries make a pledge to support this future.
So a couple of weeks ago, I made a brief presentation to the Leddy Library Information Services Department meeting and asked my colleagues if anyone had any concerns if I made a pledge on behalf of my collection responsibility (I buy books from the library's "General Books" fund). Hearing none, I checked with my Library Administration who recognized this as an effort that was aligned with our Open Access efforts, and said that I could try this out as a pilot.
Yesterday I sat with our coordinator who is in charge of the logistics of monograph ordering and we made an unglueit account together. We then associated that account with an already existing Amazon account, and made a $25 pledge. The whole thing took about 5 minutes, tops.
Personally, it is difficult to think of less risky experiment for an organization. If a book's campaign doesn't go through, there is no cost to the library and regardless of a campaign's outcome there is absolutely no obligation to do anything after making a single pledge. One can link to the unglue'd book on the Open Library in one's OPAC or one can take a copy and host it locally. Or the library can do nothing at all in knowing that the book is freely available online and readers will be able to find it using their own devices.
If I would very much like to see more libraries (as opposed to librarians) make pledges on unglue.it. As such, I will increase my own personal pledge to unglue this work by $25 as soon as I see another library making a pledge.
And I hope it's the library that you work for.
Libraries are the result of collective action. Libraries are loosely associated and widely distributed. When we coordinate ourselves independently to achieve common goals we are very powerful. Maybe the examples of collective action I have given above aren't the best examples of what we can achieve when we work together but I believe that even if they aren't, they can be good practice to get us ready for great work to come.

Golden Gate Bridge celebrates 75th birthday
SAN FRANCISCO?? Crowds gathered along San Francisco's waterfront Sunday, while San Francisco Bay was crowded with pleasure boats, tug boats and other vessels as the city celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Tens of thousands of people were expected to flock to the area to enjoy a number of events taking place along a section of waterfront stretching from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero.
At least several thousand people had gathered along the waterfront by Sunday afternoon, said Mary Currie, public affairs director for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.
"Everyone is biking and walking and looks very happy," she said. "We're off to a great start."

San Francisco resident Daniel Sutphin and his family were among those in the crowd enjoying the day and the views of the bridge.
"It's such an iconic structure, depending on the day or the hour, it just looks like it changes continuously," Sutphin said as he walked through the Fort Point area with his wife and their three young children.
Slideshow: The Golden Gate Bridge (on this page)Since it opened in 1937, more than 2 billion vehicles have crossed the 1.7-mile-long bridge named after the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance of water to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, and championed by engineer Joseph Strauss in the 1920s.
Because of the crowds expected and with no parking available near the bridge, officials were urging people to take mass transit to the events.
The California Highway Patrol was planning on shutting down traffic across the bridge from 9 p.m. through 10 p.m. for a monumental fireworks display set to take place over the bridge.
In a stark contrast to the thousands of celebrants, members of the group the Bridge Rail Foundation, an organization dedicated to stopping suicide jumps from the bridge, erected a display of 1,558 pairs of shoes, representing the number of people who died in leaps form the bridge since it opened in 1937.
"It's a symbol of how deep and serious this problem has been," said Paul Muller, a spokesman for the group. "We're still losing 30 to 35 a people a year off the bridge," he said.
Meanwhile on the water, Golden Gate ferries were running again after a one-day strike disrupted service across San Francisco Bay on Saturday.
Workers represented by the Inlandboatmen's Union walked off the job on a day strike, forcing the cancellation of ferries operated by Golden Gate between Larkspur, Sausalito and San Francisco.
PhotoBlog: Exploring the offbeat of the Golden Gate Bridge
The strike was called after nearly a year of negotiations over workloads and other matters, said Marina Secchitano, the union's regional director.
California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement Saturday evening, saying that he was appointing a board to investigate the strike, which, he claimed, created a disruption to public service.
Secchitano disputed the governor's claim, questioning the motivation to call for an investigation after a one-day strike. "(This is) an action to try to silence us," she said.
"They're counting on this process to back our membership off the issue," she said.
Ferry and union officials said service resumed Sunday when workers returned to work.

Pain is a daily part of life for too many people. This pain is caused by injuries, temporary illnesses, chronic illnesses and other diseases. Unfortunately, many people think they simply have to live with the pain because medications either do not work or are too dangerous for them to take.

This is why some people choose to try hypnosis for pain management.
Imagine a cancer patient. This person is dealing with the physical pain associated with the growing tumor in their body, the surgeries they have had, and the injections they are receiving for treatments and other fluids. And on top of physical pain, they are dealing with the deeply painful emotional stresses of dealing with the severity of their disease and the concerns that the diagnosis implies.
These patients need a way to ease the physical pain they feel so that they can attempt to enjoy their lives to the best extent that they can. They also need to ease their anxiety levels since most people agree that healing is more likely to occur in a person who is rested and in a mental state that is positive. So other than daily affirmations and prayer (which certainly have benefits), what can be done?
For many people with pain issues, hypnotherapy is a good solution. Because a hypnotherapist helps a person focus their attention towards positive things, some people see really significant results. Additionally, the fact that the hypnosis state is a very relaxed state usually allows the patient?s body the healing time and general relaxation that it has not experience since being diagnosed with cancer. We all know that our minds are powerful, and this really proves it.
While in the hypnosis state, a patient can also address the anxiety related to their disease and the negative emotions that this has brought to them. It is no surprise that feeling more relaxed mentally will help a person feel more relaxed physically. The correlation between what we think and how we feel is very real.
Hypnosis can help a person change not only their physical pain, but their emotional problems too. This is one reason why it can be such a benefit for pain management patients. Making use of the great power of our mind to bring about change in our lives is worth the effort and time. Of course, treatments need to continue with a medical doctor when a patient?s pain is associated with something that needs to be treated, but dealing with the mental side of it is important too.

Muslim Brotherhood seeks unity ahead of Egypt runoff
CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood and a military man identified with the police state of the ousted Hosni Mubarak courted defeated first-round candidates in Egypt's presidential election on Saturday, each trying to claim the mantle of the revolution for a runoff next month.
State media named the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq as the top two vote-getters in this week's first round of a close-fought election made possible by last year's popular revolt.
Official results are not due until Tuesday to allow the election committee to hear complaints and appeals about the voting. State newspapers cited no source for their vote count, which broadly tallied with previous Brotherhood estimates.
The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have tussled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.
They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes of change ignited by the anti-Mubarak uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into an experiment with Islamic rule.
The Brotherhood invited rivals, including losing candidates such as leftist Hamdeen Sabahy and moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, to talks on Saturday aimed at gaining their support for the runoff against Shafiq on June 16 and 17.
Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", it said parties that supported the uprising against Mubarak must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".
The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.
WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?
Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference as he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's popular uprising.
"Your revolution was stolen," he told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."
Shafiq said that "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let the country "drown in chaos".
Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.
"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," he declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."
On Friday he had told Egyptian television that he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.
The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.
But the military, which has supplied all Egypt's previous presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence in a new order in which the powers of the president, parliament and government are as yet undefined by a rewritten constitution.
Mursi and Shafiq only narrowly topped the vote on Wednesday and Thursday, in which unofficial results showed less than 8 percentage points separating the top four candidates.
Mursi's 25 percent paled in comparison to the parliamentary election, in which the Brotherhood gained nearly half the seats.
Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.
"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank.
ANTI-SHAFIQ FRONT?
A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, said the talks to persuade rivals to join an anti-Shafiq front would discuss the vice presidency and a new coalition government.
"We know we will succeed in uniting behind the initiative to save the nation and complete the revolution," Essam el-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told a news conference on Friday.
Long a thorn in Mubarak's flesh, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.
Trust in the Brotherhood was further undermined when the group decided to join the presidential race, after previously pledging to stay out. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a vicious smear campaign by its opponents.
Abol Fotouh, who won about 17.6 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, has said he will now back the Islamist group with which he split last year to run for president.
He did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression".
Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.
His constituency also includes Christians, who form about a 10th of Egypt's 82 million people. They complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.
Mohamed Habib, a former deputy leader of the Brotherhood who left the group last year in protest at its post-uprising policies, said the group should offer vice presidential positions to at least two people from outside the group.
He suggested one could be a Christian - an idea to which Mursi himself has said he is not opposed.

Visualize and Score... BIG!

Jared At Bat. Photo: Erica Angiolillo
I love optical illusions. They make me feel clever if I can figure them out and even when I have to peek at the answer, it?s still fun to find out how my brain was tricked. But do they serve any purpose in the real world? Can we use them to make us sharper in our everyday lives? Well if you are an athlete or just play sports for fun on the weekends then the answer may be yes. Using illusions to your advantage may help you hit the free throw, putt the ball in the hole in less strokes or even successfully knock one out of the park.
Coaches and athletes have used visual training and perception modification for years. One such method is known as ?quiet eye.? If you recall the scene of any cliche baseball movie you can remember when the player at bat focuses on the pitcher?s ball and all of his surroundings seem to dull. The yells from the screaming fans are put on mute, his gaze on the ball seems unbreakable and as a bead of sweat rolls down his forehead in slow motion he swings and crack! He hits the impossible pitch. Grand slam!
Quiet eye refers to the athlete?s ability to point the center of his vision at the ball, rim or goal and not let it go, ignoring all distractors around him. Previously studies have implied that when this is done, it may make you perceive the object of regard as bigger which can mean you are waiting for the pitcher to throw a gigantic baseball the size of a boulder. Ok, well not that big, however, a recent study demonstrates that visual illusions can be used to manipulate our surroundings, altering the way objects are perceived which may enhance or hinder our performance.
Witt et al. conducted a study in which they projected circles of light around a hole on the golf green. When the circles of light were bigger and fewer, the participants in the study actually had more trouble putting the ball into the hole than they did when the hole was surrounded by many more, smaller circles of light.
This setup borrows from the size illusion that the center circle (in this case, the hole on the putting green) will appear smaller if surrounded by fewer, relatively big circles and it will appear bigger if surrounded by many more, smaller circles. And the results? The participants were indeed able to putt more balls in the hole when the center circle (hole) was set up to be perceived larger.
Coincidence or the power of visual illusions and perception hard at work? I?ll let you know once I get back from the mini golf course with my can of white spray paint. I?m kidding.

Organ trafficking ring-leader arrested in Israel

Israeli organ trafficking ring leader Moshe Harel
A European Union (EU) prosecutor says an Israeli man suspected of running an organ trafficking network has been arrested in Israel.
?We have received information that Moshe Harel has been arrested in Israel on organ trafficking and other related offences,? EU special prosecutor Jonathan Ratel said.
Harel is wanted in Kosovo, where he and his colleagues reportedly carried out some 30 illegal kidney transplants and removals. Kosovo authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for him.
Harel?s trafficking ring used to prey on donors from poor Eastern European and Asian countries, who were promised about 15,000 euros (USD 19,000) to become organ donors.
Israel has not yet confirmed Harel?s arrest.
Reports earlier this week by Ha?aretz, indicate that at least 10 Israeli citizens were arrested for being members of an organ trafficking gang.
The Italian New Generation Foundation for Human Rights and the Everyone Group has presented evidence indicating that Sinai locals harvest the organs of the people they transfer to Israel. In this connection, a number of mass graves have been found containing the corpses of Africans missing some of their organs.

Lease Accounting Breakthrough Could Come in June ? World ...
Lease Accounting Breakthrough Could Come in June
U.S. and international accounting rule makers finally may be ready next month to resolve a debate over corporate lease accounting, that would bring $2 trillion worth of lease obligations onto corporate balance sheets. Members of the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board said Thursday they were ready to vote on a method for how new lease accounting rules will impact corporate earnings in June, which means a new draft of the rules could be finished by the end of this year.
The lease accounting overhaul is part of a six-year effort to align global accounting rules and increase transparency around off-balance sheet obligations. Companies, however, have been reticent to embrace the change as it could bulk up their balance sheets, alter fundamental ratios, and require changes to debt covenants.
In a joint discussion at FASB headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut, members of both boards said they were open to voting on two methods for representation of lease costs, that they have?discussed with companies and investors since April?. The first option, which the boards proposed in their first draft of a lease accounting proposal, recognizes leases, or the right to use a piece of property or equipment as a new ?right of use asset? on corporate balance sheets. It requires a depreciation method that front-loads, or concentrates the cost of the lease into its early years. The second option would bring leases on the balance sheet, but let companies expense their rent payments equally over the course of a lease, similar to what they do now. Board members said they wanted to vote in June on whether to allow companies to use only one method or the other, or some combination.
?I think we?re stuck with at least considering seriously two different lease models,? FASB member Thomas Linsmeier said at the meeting. ?While he said it is tempting for the board to choose just one model, he said he?s become convinced that there are ?fundamentally different? types of leases. Some leases he said are just another form of financing, where a lessee is choosing to take out a lease rather than finance the purchase of the asset. But other leases, such as real estate leases, simply let companies buy access to a property for a certain period of time, and don?t have all the same financing components.
?Just because you write ?lease? at the top of the paper does not mean they all convey the same rights and obligations,? FASB Chairman Leslie Seidman said.
Some board members said they were supportive of adopting two forms of leases, citing input from airline companies who said they would be happy to use the ?right of use? model for their planes, but wanted to use traditional straight-line rent expenses for their real estate leases.
Other board members, including Patricia McConnell from the IASB, said they wanted to stay with just one model, rather than two for the sake of ?simplicity,? but debated whether the ?right of use? model or the straight-line method would be best.
Two other methods of asset amortization that the boards discussed with companies and investors over the past few months were largely rejected as ?non-starters? on Thursday because board members said auditors and companies found them too complex and difficult to apply.
The accounting rule makers have faced fresh criticism on the lease project in the past few days. U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Congressman John Campbell ( R-CA) from the U.S. House Financial Services Committee?sent a letter signed by 60 lawmakers?to the FASB this week saying that they wanted FASB to do a comprehensive study on the costs of lease accounting before making a final rule.
The board members, however, said that on Thursday that they still believe investors want to see lease obligations on corporate balance sheets to get a clearer picture of corporate liabilities. The boards have ?unqualified, overwhelming support for putting leases on the balance sheet,? IASB Chairman Hans Hoogervorst said at the meeting.

Developments in Google's bid for Motorola Mobility
Here are some key developments in Google's Inc.'s planned acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.:
Aug. 15, 2011: Google announces plans to spend $12.5 billion to buy Motorola Mobility. Google would get Motorola's lineup of cellphones, tablet computers and cable set-top boxes. More important, Google would get Motorola's more than 17,000 patents ? a crucial weapon in an intellectual arms race with Apple, Microsoft and others to gain more control over the increasingly lucrative market for mobile devices.
Aug. 16: Standard & Poor's says investors should sell Google's stock because it believes the decision to buy Motorola Mobility increases the risk to the company and its shares. S&P says that although the acquisition would include a patent trove, that might not be enough to keep Google's Android mobile operating software from encountering intellectual-property issues.
Aug. 22: Standard & Poor's reverses course, saying Google shares have fallen so much that they've now become a good deal.
Sept. 13: In a regulatory filing, Google reveals that the $12.5 billion purchase price is 33 percent more than Google initially offered. If the deal falls through, Google will still have to pay Motorola Mobility $2.5 billion.
Sept. 28: It's disclosed that the U.S. Justice Department is taking a closer look at the deal. The move had been widely expected.
Oct. 27: Motorola Mobility reports smaller net loss in the July-September quarter as phone shipments rises by more than 25 percent from a year earlier.
Nov. 17: Motorola Mobility says its shareholders have overwhelmingly voted to accept the proposed sale.
Dec. 2: With the Motorola deal still pending, the U.S. Justice Department approves Google's acquisition of online advertising service Admeld after concluding the deal wouldn't diminish competition in one of the Internet's most lucrative marketing niches.
Jan. 26, 2012: Motorola Mobility issues disappointing results for the last three months of the year. It reports a loss, mirroring preliminary numbers issued three weeks earlier, amid fierce competition in the markets for smartphones and tablet computers. Some analysts have already been worried that Motorola Mobility will become a financial millstone that could drag down Google's earnings growth. If that happens, Google's stock price would likely suffer.
Feb. 13: European antitrust regulators clear the deal. Although regulators say they didn't find a reason to believe that the transaction would pose any competitive problems, they raise concerns about Motorola's aggressive enforcement of its patents. Hours later, the U.S. Department of Justice also approves the deal.
Feb. 22: Microsoft lodges a formal complaint with the European Union's competition regulator accusing Motorola Mobility of breaking competition rules with its aggressive enforcement of patent rights against rivals. The complaint also names Google, which Microsoft fears will continue Motorola Mobility's tight hold on key patents. It follows a similar complaint from Apple.
April 3: The European Commission agrees to investigate whether Motorola is unfairly restricting competitors from licensing essential patents. Motorola holds patents that are essential for standards linked to 2G and 3G wireless technology ? the focus of Apple's complaint ? as well as Wi-Fi connections and compressing video for online use, which are at the heart of Microsoft's complaint.
May 1: Motorola reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue.
Saturday: Authorities in China approve Google's bid, though they require Google to make its Android operating system for mobile devices available to all at no cost for the next five years. The condition is apparently in response to concerns that competition could be hurt if Google gives updated versions to Motorola and withholds them from others. Google doesn't currently charge for Android, and it already had pledged to make Android available to all its mobile partners.
Tuesday: Google says it has completed the acquisition. With the purchase, Google expands beyond its roots in programming software to provide Internet search and other online services to manufacturing equipment for the first time. The expansion will test Google's ability to keep its business partners, shareholders and employees happy. Dennis Woodside, president of Google's Americas region, replaces Sanjay Jha as Motorola's CEO.

Home Improvement Ideas For Ambiance And Security | 12 Press ...
Oftentimes, homeowners find themselves in awkward positions simply because they own their home. Sometimes money is tight, and spending it on energy efficient appliances is typically not in their budget. It is definitely a worthwhile endeavor, however, because of the money you will eventually save. Simply do what you can to make your house the best it can be ? this is our recommendation. Energy efficiency can begin with a simple projects such as plugging the leaks in your attic that contribute to your energy bill. Once that is done, then you can buy thermal insulation and install that in the attic flooring and walls. Other projects may cost more money to do. You should attempt to do these after the installation is installed.
Homes that have more than one story frequently will have a rather general sort of railing for their stairs. The ones with the quaint metal railings are not really very attractive. This scheme will entail changing out those boring railings with some with pizzazz. If you do a little looking online, you will see that you have many options, other than the standard railings you will usually see. The different types of wood these railings are made of are endless. These railings will likely be more intricate, with more detail than a general type of railing. Once you see what is on the market, you will never look at your old railings the same.
This is a tough economic time for people all around the world. Crime is also on the rise. So think about installing a small-scale security system as a home improvement project. For example, you can find all kinds of outdoor lights that are used with a motion detector. Due to the fact that the lights will turn on automatically, anyone outside of your home will be revealed. By installing a hidden video camera with a remote monitor, you can take images and videos of what is outside. Then, from the interior of your home, you can observe what is going on.
If you live in a cold area, then what follows is an easy home improvement task that will allow you to stay warm. This project involves installing a heat lamp in your bathroom ceiling with a separate light switch for control. You will utilize this to stay warm when you get out of the bath or shower.
This sort of comfort-related improvement does not cost as much as you might think. This lamp can be nearly effortless to install, along with wiring to expanded electrical switch housing. Once you partake in the warm feeling that it brings after getting out of the shower on a cold winter night, you wont ever want to live without it. It is amazing how much impact a seemingly small addition to a household can have on your lifestyle. A simple sink to your basement could be a great illustration. The installation of something like this will be appreciated by most everyone for different uses. As you have seen, there are some pretty basic projects that are not only simply to do, but are practical as well.

Researchers: 2,000 false convictions in past 23 years

Chris Seward/ The News & Observer (Raleigh), file
Sylvester Smith, center, smiles after he was granted a new trial after two witnesses recanted their testimony in a Brunswick County courtroom in Bolivia, N.C., Nov. 5, 2004. He had wrongfully served 20 years on a sexual assault charge.
By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com
In 1984, two North Carolina girls, age 4 and 6, were molested. They told police their abuser was Sylvester Smith, who was dating the mother of one of the girls, and he went to prison for the crime.?
Twenty years later,?the victims recanted, saying their grandmother told them to blame Smith, and his conviction was overturned.
But the person they say who really molested them -- their cousin, who was nine at the time -- could not be prosecuted because he was under age at the time of the alleged crime.?He is, however,?serving a life sentence for another crime he committed in the meantime: murder.
Smith's case illustrates the fallout from false convictions: He lost roughly 20 years of his life to prison, while the alleged perpetrator was free to commit other crimes.
Smith's discarded conviction?is one of nearly 900 such cases filed?in the National Registry of Exonerations, a database of prisoners exonerated?in the U.S. of serious crimes since 1989, that was made public on Monday. To qualify as an "exoneree," an individual must have been convicted and later relieved of all the legal consequences.
In compiling the database, researchers became aware of more than 1,100 other?cases in which convictions were overturned due to 13 separate police corruption scandals, most of which involved the planting of drugs or guns on innocent defendants. Those exonerations are not included in the registry.?
?
ExonerationRegistry.org?is the largest database of its kind ever assembled, according to its creators from the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law. Nonetheless, researchers are not able to say what percentage of convictions in the U.S. are false, in part because it can take so long for new evidence to come to light. There are currently about 2.5 million people in prison in the United States.
The earliest cases in the database date back to 1989, when?DNA evidence freed its first two prisoners.
"We can figure that as sort of the modern period in exonerations because DNA was a big game-changer," said?University of Michigan Law Professor Samuel Gross, one of the?registry's creators. "It provided a scientific instrument for reviewing cases and providing a different type of evidence about those cases because the technology didn't exist."
But DNA doesn't actually account for the majority of the exonerations in the database, after?an initial wave in the early 1990s, he said.
"DNA is a fairly narrow-gauged tool. It only fits particular type of crimes," Gross said, noting that?only 37 percent of the people in the database were cleared with the help of DNA evidence.?"In the public mind, exoneration became identified with DNA... Most of these cases -- DNA and non-DNA -- everybody agrees there was a mistake; frequently because the criminal was caught, often because we agree there was no crime at all."
Gross co-authored a report on the database that pulls together statistics on?exonerations from January 1989 through February 2012. While the database is constantly updated and new exonerations are being added all the time, the report focuses on the 873 individuals whose cases had been filed before March.?
Gross and his report co-author, University of Michigan law school graduate Michael Shaffer, discovered correlations in the types of crimes and reasons for wrongful convictions.
- Fabricated crimes. False convictions in child sex abuse cases were usually due to fabricated crimes;?sometimes?a divorced parent told a child to make up lies about?an ex-spouse abusing them, or police or a therapist convinced a child to say something that wasn't true.
- Eyewitness mistakes. In adult rape cases, for example, false convictions were typically based on eyewitness mistakes, "more often than not, mistakes by white victims falsely identifying black defendants," the report said.
- Misconduct by authorities. For homicides, misconduct by authorities was the second-biggest cause of false convictions, just behind?false eyewitness accounts.
Eyewitnesses are crucial to a trial, experts say, and their mistakes, whether intentional or not, can have a huge impact.
"The bulk of the evidence that is presented in trials?in human testimony. Almost all of the time, energy, and effort is spent hearing people's statement in what occurred at a different place and a different time," Dan Simon, a professor of law and psychology at USC, said. "The bottom line is, people are often inaccurate."
Asking an eyewitness to identify a suspect from a lineup demonstrates this.
"There's a nice study that shows slight variations in the way the lineup is conducted can result in swings of accuracy from as low as 14 percent to as high as 86 percent," Simon said.
Thanks to DNA evidence, Robert Dewey, 51, walked out of a Colorado courtroom Monday as a free man. He served 17 years in prison for a rape and murder he did not commit. KUSA-TV's Will Ripley reports.
Confessing to a crime you didn't commit
Another factor in false convictions is what happens in the interrogation room. The report tracks 135 people who falsely confessed to a crime, and went to prison as a result.
"Why would anyone ever admit doing a terrible crime they didn't do?" Gross said. "The first thing to note is the risk false confessions goes up rapidly when the suspects are either juveniles or mentally handicapped or both."
In other cases in the database, a comment made to authorities was misinterpreted as a confession, or police pressure led to the false confession.
How effective are police lineups? Take our test
"Some people are being interrogated at a time of extreme mental anguish and distress," Gross said.?"There was a very depressing case from Lake County, Illinois. He confessed to raping and murdering his young daughter, 8 or 9 years old, and a friend of hers. But consider the circumstances. He was being interrogated by the police, probably for 10 or 20 hours, within a day or two of when his daughter was kidnapped, raped and murdered and then they turned on him."
Exonerees can be found in all parts of the country, but most were concentrated in Illinois, New York, Texas, and California.?
-
93 percent?are men, 7?percent?women;
-
Nearly 50 percent?are black, 38 percent?white, 11 percent?Hispanic and 2 percent?Native American or Asian;
-
48 percent had been falsely convicted of homicides, 35 percent of sexual assaults (23 percent adult, 12 percent child), five percent robberies, five percent other violent crimes, and seven percent drug, white-collar and other non-violent crimes.
As a group, they spent more than 10,000 years in prison, an average of more than 11 years each.
Free from bars, but not from stigma
Smith, the man from North Carolina who was accused of molestation, maintained his innocence all along. He was only freed after one of the victims spoke to the other and decided to come forward in 2004.

Chris Seward/ The News & Observer (Raleigh), file
Sylvester Smith's wife Phillis Smith, right, reacts as Judge William Gore announced that Smith would be granted a new trial after two witnesses recanted their testimony in Bolivia, N.C., Nov. 5, 2004.
"They said they were more or less encouraged to accuse Mr. Smith, but it took a number of years and a great passage of time," Smith's lawyer, Roy Trest, said. "Obviously, he was extremely elated after all the years he had spent in prison."
Smith?asked for a pardon from the governor, but was denied.
Now 61 and in poor health, he lives with his wife -- who he was married to but separated from before he went to prison -- in Brunswick County, N.C., and has established a friendship with one of the victims who accused him, his lawyer said.
Not all exonerees who leave prison are able to reintegrate back into society like Smith, despite a court proclaiming them innocent.
"Even if people honestly believe that this person was truly innocent, there is a certain stigma that comes with the mere fact that you were in prison," Simon said.?"You were with bad people, you were antisocial, you had to live in the jungle-like societies you often find in prisons."
Sometimes, families break up when a defendant goes to prison. Finding a job after release can be hard?too.
"Often times, the state is really unhelpful. There is no automatic method to get your criminal record expunged," Simon said. "And they have huge holes in their results, and often times they lack the skills that would help you get a job. Everyone else was studying while you were stuck in a cell."
Simon believes the registry will help reform the justice system because it helps experts analyze the causes of false convictions.?The creators are still adding cases to ExonerationRegistry.org. Gross said he hopes?exonerees will?contact his team?if they had their convictions overturned and don't see their story in the database.?
How much confidence do you have in the criminal justice system in the U.S.?
