Report: Pets Getting Fatter; Overall Health Declines | Brook-Falls ...

2012 Banfield State of Pet Health ReportOverall pet health in the United States continues to decline due in large part to an alarming rise in obesity among dogs and cats, according to a newly released report from Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest veterinary practice in the world.

The Banfield Pet Hospital State of Pet Health 2012 Report?- the only report of its kind to capture and analyze the medical data from more than 2 million dogs and nearly 430,000 cats seen at?the company?s?800 hospitals in 43 states ? shows that pet obesity continues to rise at alarming rates, increasing 37% for dogs and 90% for cats since 2007. The unbroken trend is of serious concern, especially given the established link between weight gain and the onset of chronic health conditions such as arthritis, which?saw a 38% gain for dogs and a 67% in cats over the same period.

?Geriatric cats seem to be suffering the most,? the report states. ?In this age group, the prevalence has more than doubled. Additionally, overweight cats may be at risk for other conditions such as diabetes mellitus and heart disease, which is why maintaining an ideal weight is extremely important.?

While diet and nutritional counseling can help slim down a pudgy canine or a corpulent kitty, the majority of pet owners Banfield surveyed didn?t even recognize that their pet had a weight problem with 76% of dog owners and 69% of cat owners believing that their pet was just the right weight.
